...Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Aedan        (Played by Todd)

top

A pale scarecrow of a young man perches barefoot in a ruined stone cathedral. Darkness and starlight stream in through broken walls and the wide open roof. The floor is littered with toppled and fractured statues. From the wall directly behind him, a stained glass window depicting a sunset casts a somber violet glow across the scene.

The man is garbed in royal purple velvet leggings, a short black jacket, and a lacy white shirt opened at the collar to reveal a silver torc. He crouches on the stand of a displaced statue, his face an angular medley below a shock of black hair. Violet eyes focus on his hands, extended and parallel to the ground. On his lower hand a small, skeletal marionette dances. Around the fingertips of his upper hand, wisps of silver smoke flicker and spark.

Deirdre's Descendant. Irrepressible and Impetuous.

A sorcerer and  a swordsman with a knack for improvisation. Aedan spent ten years with Caine sailing the low seas and learning about life. He stole Caine's trump deck and trumped to Amber via King Random six months before the campaign started. Right at the beginning of things, Aedan journeyed to Tir na-Nog'th. He spoke with the shade of his mother. Immediately thereafter, Aedan fell into unconsciousness. When next he awoke, he saw that his hair had been streaked with silver, and a touch of the moon lurked behind his violet eyes.

Picklehead

What was known of Aedan in Amber when the campaign began: He came to Amber and walked the Pattern about six months ago. He apparently had been under Caine's eye in one of Deirdre's shadow realms near the courts after Caine found him about 10 years ago. It is well known that Caine did not want Aedan to enter Amber yet, and that he was angry that Aedan defied his wishes. The two have not had much contact since, but then, Caine has been avoiding the Castle since his failed confrontation with Benedict over Gerard's dismissal from the fleet. Aedan is an excellent flute player and has been known to perform in Amber city at various establishments or just on the street when the mood strikes him. He is a forthright and sometimes shocking, iconoclastic lad.

...Surely some revelation is at hand;

William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Gabriel        (Played by Ameer)

top

A highly stylized portrait with a picture of Amber on the left, the Courts of Chaos on the right, and the Keep of Four Worlds off-center to the left. A somber and rather serious young man with pale skin and reddish-gold hair stands in the middle, his profile displayed. He seems to be looking not at the horizon, but underneath it. All of the images appear faded and translucent, as if they are merely an ornate facade overlaying something else.

Brand's Spawn. Skeevy and Scheming.

Gabriel grew up knowing his father was dead and wishing he weren't. Then Brand returned and his son's life became much more complicated. Gabriel was an efficient nursemaid for his father, suffering through Brand's violent mood swings in a secluded manor in Amber City. Gabriel learned gardening, the art of Trump, and the quickest way to end a duel: with a fireball. Ever a young man who kept his own counsel, Gabriel saw conspiracies everywhere. Most of the time, he was wrong.

Bitter Gnome Boy

What was known of Gabriel in Amber when the campaign began: A somber and rather serious boy (appears to be in his late teens), Gabriel appeared in Amber about a year ago, tending to his father, Brand. Gabriel gained the quick attention of the King in the first week of his arrival by killing someone who said a derogatory slur in passing about Brand. While the duel itself followed the rules of formal challenge, the outcome did not -- a very messy end for Gabriel's opponent and his seconds.

Given Random's rather stern warning, Gabriel has since cleaned up his act. He has come a long way from that hot-headedness since his arrival a year ago. He now backs away from arguments before he gets too wrapped up in them (although that is not, unfortunately, true all of the time). Much of his fire was dimmed as he has explored the history of the events transpiring around Patternfall.

...We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

William Wordsworth, "The World is Too Much with Us"

Giselle        (Played by Sara)

top

Her eyes are the intense, almost glowing blue of forget-me-nots as they look out from the card. The hair that tumbles over her shoulders is rumpled as if she has just arisen from some lover's bed, a pale, reddish-golden cross between candle flames and sunset clouds. Behind her there is darkness, cavernous, soaring, grand and cold. A cloak of blackness hangs from one of her shoulders. Blue metallic threads sparkle out of the inky black cloak. It looks too heavy for her, but the weight does not bend her. She is the one spot of brightness, of warmth, in a world of cold night, and on her lips is a tiny, private smile.

Flora's Fling. Flighty and Flirtatious.

Her mother's daughter, but with a fierce emotional wellspring from which she could draw out every emotion from passion to love. Perhaps that spectrum seems rather narrow, but Giselle knew its every nuance. Unlike the rest of the Player Characters, Giselle had grown up in the Fey realms, raised by her father Finnvarra and her uncle Dagda. Her penchant for Fey Sorcery soon became apparent, as did her inability to escape even the simplest trap.

Miss Euphemism

What was known of Giselle in Amber when the campaign began: ...nothing.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Gregory        (Played originally by Guy, played later by Vrin)

top

5'10", 32 years old. Long, dark, curly hair, strong build, dressed in noble huntsman's garb. He has given up his commission in the Arden Rangers, in which he had risen to the command of a small patrol, the Silver Ash, when Julian forfeited control of Arden to Benedict.

Julian's Offspring. Stoic and Stubborn.

A man of duty, honor, and woodsy stuff. Gregory followed his father's lead and spent most of his formative years in Arden. As an officer in the Arden rangers, he became a responsible fellow. This would cause him great frustration during his obligatory rescues of Giselle. Gregory was for all appearances a warrior, but he had a few tricks up his sleeve. Julian's son earned his nickname (Tact and Diplomacy Gregory) after he rode into the Courts of Chaos, right through the city, wearing Julian's White Armor and frightening hordes of Chaosian children. He was quite proud of that.

Old Tact and Diplomacy

What was known of Gregory in Amber when the campaign began: Gregory was barely old enough to serve during Patternfall, but has been a huntsman all his life and has since risen to the command of a small patrol in the Arden Rangers, the Silver Ash. He gave up his commission when Julian surrendered his control of Arden to Benedict's forces. Prior to this, Gregory had some contact with Amber throughout Random's reign, but was far more likely to be out in Arden.

...The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Magni        (Played by Dan)

top

Six foot six inches tall and broad shouldered, short, spiked, white hair, dark blue eyes, clean shaven, with a wide, Slavic face. He is usually found dressed in cavalier-like riding clothes dominated by crimson and black silks, complete with polished knee-high boots and broad, feathered hat. He wears a wide belt with a golden buckle and what looks like a flat iron collar around his neck. One his right arm he wears a red lacquered vambrace with a curious design in black: a wheat sheaf and a sword crossed. On his left wrist he sports a Rolex watch.

Parentage Unknown. Friendly yet Furtive.

Escorted to a family function by Flora, Magni quickly became a source of much humor among the family. Whether it was jokes about his extra-friendly relationship with Florimel, his unusual choice of jewelry (an iron collar welded to his neck), or his habit of saying exactly what he felt like saying, Magni was never boring. An accomplished violinist, cigar-smoker, and cavalier, Magni managed to be both mysterious and straightforward at the same time. Magni established himself as everyone's companion, the helpful guy we could all turn to. Then his friends started turning up dead....

Flora's Boy Toy

What was known of Magni in Amber when the campaign began: Magni blew into Amber on Flora's arm about three weeks ago...

...Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;

William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Raj        (Played by James)

top

A large man, he stands nearly as tall as his father, Gerard, and also nearly as broad. His skin is dark, somewhat similar to a typical Polynesian. His hair is black and thick, and his eyes are so dark as to often be mistaken for black as well. Raj is known for wearing his emotions openly, whether it be his boisterous good humor or his furious temper. He often consorts with people of all social classes, and spends a good deal of time in Shadow.

Gerard's Bouncing Baby Boy. Doughty and Dour.

Immensely strong, loyal, and righteous. Despite his anger at the way Random and Benedict had drummed his father out of the Navy, Raj remained an officer in the Castle Guard. He always put his duty before his pleasure, or so it seemed. Raj wasn't above a bout of late-night carousing with Gabriel and Aedan, but he never shirked his responsibility, and he always tried to do what was best for Amber—at least, that's what he told us.

Self-Declared Hero of This Story

What was known of Raj in Amber when the campaign began: Raj is known to have spent some time at sea, both with Gerard and on separate assignments, and he also acts as a lieutenant for his father in the city, maintaining the city guard. Though he loves the sea, he has shown a preference - or aptitude - for duties on land. Over the past few decades he has been in and out of the city, fulfilling various assignments before leaving on journeys of his own.

Amberites:

...The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"

Commander in Chief, Lord General Benedict (Envy and Wrath)

started the game in charge not only of Amber's armies, but also as coordinator for the fleets and in command of the forces in Arden. His position in Arden was proving difficult to maintain once Julian and his son withdrew along with all the most senior Arden Rangers, leaving Benedict's men at the mercy of Arden's true inhabitants.

Prince General Gerard (Envy and Avarice)

had been reduced from Prince Admiral of Amber's fleet to Prince General of the Amber City Militia at Benedict's insistence. He was a brooding, angry presence in the Castle at the game's start.

Prince General Bleys (Pride)

was in shadow with the Amber Expeditionary. He and Random never got on well, but Random gave him leeway in this area to explore and to seek out lost soldiers and shadow pockets of the Patternfall War.

Prince Julian (Wrath)

appeared to have ceded command of the Arden Rangers to Benedict without a fight. He retired to his private estate in Arden with his son, Gregory. At the same time, the most senior rangers in the Arden forces also retired, leaving only the junior staff. Records, pathways, supply stations, and other vital infrastructure became lost or were found vandalized overnight. Benedict had to strip the army to reinforce the Rangers, and then found them under constant seige by Arden's inhabitants. Julian maintained that he was not involved.

Prince Brand (Avarice and Pride)

had been pulled from the Abyss by Swayvil's men. He was physically weak and had been stripped of the Pattern. He returned to Amber and was allowed to retire to a townhouse in the city, where he was being looked after by his son Gabriel.

Princess Llewella

was in Rebma. Politically, she was an important force there. With Random on the throne, Rebma's queen Moire believed they could finally press their claim for differential status from other Golden Circle Realms, and Llewella was seen as an effective liaison for these negotiations.

Prince Admiral Caine

plied the seas of Amber and shadow with his arm of the fleet. He came into Amber about 6 months before to support Gerard against Benedict's charges of incompetence. This was also shortly after Caine's ward, Aedan, had left his service. Caine's plea was unsuccessful; he left Amber in disgust with a skeleton part of the fleet and had not been seen since.

Prince Martin

spent most of his time on Texorami, where he was a musician. He avoided the stresses of shadow shifting and other Pattern forces that would aggravate the wound he received from Brand before Patternfall; it had never healed.

Carl

was the son of Corwin who had been living on the Shadow Earth known to Florimel and Corwin. He had been spying on Flora for some years before the game began. (Carl was created by Dennis Castello. He only appeared in the game briefly.)

Prince Osric

was dead. Or, not so dead, but banished, cursed, and imprisoned by Oberon, Finndo, and Benedict. Finndo died putting him there.

Prince Corwin (Sloth and Gluttony)

had spent most of his time in Amber "helping" Random, though he was, frankly, retired. He had grown dissolute and depressed as the realms defined by his own Pattern turned out to be threadbare shadows of his desire.

King Random

was, well, King. Of Amber. Ouch.

Princess Deirdre

had fallen with Brand into the Abyss. She had one thin thread of consciousness present through a construct in Tir, but was otherwise lost.

Rowena

was the daughter of Llewella living in Rebma. She was unknown to the players, but an acquaintance of Martin's.

King Eric

was dead. Except in the Universe in which Brand did not stab Martin. There, he was the king of an Amber on the brink of losing a war with Chaos.

Searlas

was the son of Gerard who had been raised by Osric in the shadow of Osric's banishment. Gerard had apparently worked with Osric for some time before Patternfall. Gerard escaped using Osric's Greatsword, abandoning Searlas there when he was just a child.

Princess Fiona

had become Random's right hand, assisting him with the subtler nuances of the powers he had been forced to command.

Sunset

was the daughter of Brand. She had been in Osric's shadow in the role of a Witch Crone advisor, spying on Osric on behalf of Brand since before Patternfall.

Princess Flora (Vanity & Lust)

kept herself apart from Amber, spending most of her time on Shadow Earth and in the company of her relatives and lovers among the Fae Realms.

Chaosians:

...Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;

William Wordsworth, "The World is Too Much with Us"

Lady Dara of Sawall

was the mother of Despil and Jurt Sawall and of Merlin. She had married into House Sawall from House Hendrake after Merlin's birth and had Merlin adopted. She was working on developing a plausible position from which Merlin could advance towards the royal court of Thelbane. Swayvil's sudden departure at the beginning of the game made her life very busy indeed.

Lord Mandor Sawall

started the game in the Fae Realms, under his long-time guise as The Dagda, advisor to King Finvarra and the tutor of his children. He was called away to tend to the pressing needs of Dara and Merlin on Swayvil's death.

Lord Despil Sawall

was a noted Courts historian. In the game he was seen briefly in support of Merlin's bid for the Throne of Chaos.

Lord Merlin of Sawall

woke up in a sweat at the beginning of the game and was not allowed to stop running until he hit the Throne of Chaos.

Fae:

...Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;

William Wordsworth, "The World is Too Much with Us"

Adhamhnan was a little seen Fae Knight Independent. His people were being wooed by Lugh when he took the regency of the Fae Realms. Eredwaith was a fae alchemist. He became an associate of Amber's Lord Gwydion during the Pattern Beast Uprising and refused to depart.
Lord Ailill was the Keeper of the Black Oak Arden Way, loyal to King Finnvarra and to Julian, the King in Green. A pale, dark-haired warrior of the Sidhe, He was Giselle's lover at the start of the game. Elurival was a fae sylph, also a victim of Brand's spell in Tir. She was in a debt of service to The Derga.
Ailleen was the Mistress of the Inn at the Crossroads. King Finnvarra was the King of the Fae Realms, sometime husband of Princess Flora, and father of Giselle. He had sent a shade to the meeting in Tir that had been ambushed by Brand, but he ended up a victim of the spell nonetheless. He was also the nephew of Oberon.
Aogan was a Lord Knight of the Unseelie Sidhe; he commanded Aogan's Word, a group of Unseelie Knights that roamed shadow at his command. The Inn at the Crossroads was a cross-shadow place centered on the person of The Derga, its keeper. It was the only neutral place in shadow for the meeting of the Seelie and Unseelie, noble and common, friend and foe. Its destruction was a coup for those who sought strife and weakness in the Fae Realms.
Caiolte was a Knight of Finnvarra's Court. He sought Finnvarra's favor to woo his daughter, Giselle. Inuirre was a relatively innocent, satyr-like fae being and sorcerer whose name was mistaken by Giselle for that of Nuirre.
Prince Cian was Finnvarra's second son. He was a sorcerer of considerable skill. At the beginning of the game he had been turned to stone by Brand at a meeting in Tir na Nogth. Later he and Lugh fought repeatedly over the regency. Llew was Ailill's Kennel Master.
Cuimin, Tasgall and Uarraig were three of the Unseelie riders that followed the call of the henge stones to Nuirre's rising. Lugh was Finnvarra's first son. Known as the Golden Lion, he was a strong, but inflexible regent. Throughout the game he struggled to keep the alliance of the Unseelie his father had maintained.
Dagda. See Mandor Sawall in the Chaosian section, above. Naiomhean was another Lord Knight of Finnvarra's court. He remained loyal to the court after Lugh took the regency.
Deoradhan was a Sidhe mage exiled from Finnvarra's court. He was assisting Skye with the henge summoning to raise an army for his attack on the court under the banner of Nuirre. In fact, the whole show was being manipulated by Osric and Searlas. Nuirre was a much-feared, legendary Unseelie sorcerer and necromancer. Many prophecies said that he would rise and lead an army of the Unseelie when the man who killed him died. That man was Finnvarra. The prophecy was either hokum or Finnvarra's near-death state wasn't near enough -- but it was used to great advantage by Skye and Deoradhan to begin the raising of their own army.
The Derga was the keeper of the Inn at the Crossroads, but also in a very real sense he was the Inn. He was another victim of Brand's spell in Tir at the beginning of the game. Skye was a Tuathan warrior and one of Deoradhan's co-conspirators in the "resurrection" of Nuirre.
Dubhdara was a Lord Knight of Finnvarra's court who remained loyal when Lugh became regent. Tracker was a fae beast in the service of Lord Ailill.
