Winds That Will Be — Ameer's Commentary
Ameer's
Comments on the Game
Well, it has come to the wire, I am to give my comments, and I have only found one (1) secret message. Well done, Todd, you have finally defeated me.
Now, onto my (insightful) comments about the game. When all is said and done, playing Gabriel (and some would say interacting with him) was an exercise in frustration. Dan pegged him pretty accurately when he said that Gabriel was "bitter gnome boy."
In the beginning, Gabriel only had two real loves in his life ... his family (all of it), and Amber. He loved them perhaps a little too idealistically and definitely too much. If any of his cousins had come to him and asked for his aid, he would immediately drop whatever he was doing and assist them and expected the same in turn.
However, all things change. Amber changed and Gabriel's love for it stayed in the past. Try as he might, he could never love that which it became, and he struggled futily to change it back to what it was. When that failed, he fixated his attention to the the only thing left, his family. They changed as well and betrayed, in his view, the family and Amber by their actions.
Finally, in one critical juncture, he found his father Brand's body. Brand had sacrificed his life to save Gabriel from himself. That final act of my father enabled me to finally free myself from my co-dependency with my cousins, and declare war on them if they threatened to take down all that I cherished and loved.
I have to give kudos for Simone and the other players for making a Universe that inspired me to both love and hate (closer emotions than we like to think). Character development, growth, and change is a difficult thing for a GM to make a player do in a game. I came to both love and loathe that which our characters became. I loathed them for some/many/all of the actions we performed, but loved them for I understood why and how we had become what we were.
ATB,
