The Times, They Are A-Changin’
Everyone agrees that there is a lot less of Shadow than there used to be. There was speculation as to whether this is due to the fact that there are a lot less Amberite elders than there used to be, and mixed emotions as to whether that’s good, bad, or ugly.
Magic is apparently still stronger in Amber than it used to be. Why, in the old days, it took Gabriel half a day to turn into a tree! In fact, there is more energy for spooky powers now, albeit not as much as during the Patternflare incident.
Gabriel fondled a few trumps to see if they were cold. Caine’s wasn’t, but Osric’s was. What does that signify? I miss my mommy.
At dinner, we were joined by Superdiet Corwin and “Old Scarface” Flora. Yes, lovely Florimel is really taking a fashion risk this year with the extreme version of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez’s trademark look. We’ll see if it catches on. But while Flora suffers, Brand is reportedly all better thank you. Did the Unicorn heal him so he could run off to the Fount of Power, blow sorcerous smoke up his own ass, and squash everyone like gnats? Only time will tell.
Martin arrived, still looking somewhat dapper in his three-piece suit. He was looking into the strange goings-on surrounding Random’s demise. Corwin said that none of the townspeople remembered anything unusual, and only a few of the guards did. Gregory speculated that perhaps it was only the guards the Amberites interacted with. We looked into that, and the GM told us whether or not it was true (hint, hint!).
Speaking of Gregory, he and Giselle related the Nearly Prophetic Tale of Julian the Savior. Apparently Giselle made some pre-fizzle comments to the effect that some great force was coming to Amber and Julian said “I have come.” We do know that he summoned some Sidhe stealth rangers, but we doubted that Julian’s plan worked out quite the way he had hoped. If he reappears as some primeval thing, I’ll say “I told ya so.”
GM's Commentary
in which you will find some references to the actual events that occurred in the game -- usually less amusing (or flattering to Todd's character) than the Chronicler's version...
...Hey! He managed to get it mostly right this time!
Chaos in Uproar
With the King of Chaos’s death, and a request for a Formal Envoy from Amber, talk turned to our distant neighbors. Nobody was appointed Ambassador to Chaos, although Flora hinted that her slutty reputation might exclude her from the post. Gregory and Giselle had met with some good ol’ Hendrake boys, so their report wasn’t official. However, Chaos apparently believes that the Jewel of Judgment is no more (according to Giselle. I don’t make this stuff up. Well, only some of it). Brand concurred. Me, I’m waiting for Magni to produce it at the perfect moment. Hey, with all the stuff he’s pocketed, he’s bound to have the Jewel.
Gerard apparently went on his
merrygrumpy way to return the Great Sword of Gerard to Osric. Word on the street was that Osric was banned from Amber for creating that sword. Somehow, the sword itself wasn’t banned, and Gerard got it. There’s a secret there somewhere. Magni and Aedan rode off into shadow to stop Gerard and bring the sword back, but they got sidetracked along the way and never left Amber.Corwin reiterated the worthlessness of his Pattern. It contained only Shadows of his own desire and a few warm, clean, mismatched socks. Perhaps he just didn’t have enough kids wandering around to strengthen it. Is this a clue about the nature of the Oberon Pattern? Did I come up with a theory that Ameer hasn’t explored yet? Tavakoli, get right on it.
Oh, we did eat dinner while doing all this talking. At least, Aedan did. Yum.
Fae Gossip
Finnvarra is Oberon’s nephew, the son of Oberon’s unnamed brother. Dagda is a force behind the throne, with his own agenda. He used to spend a great deal of time at the Inn at the Crossroads when there was a crossroads. Now all roads run parallel. It’s a real bitch trying to get across shadow, but if you’re going all the way to Chaos you’ll save weeks of travel time. Anyway, Dagda is really Mandor of House Sawall in Chaos. He apparently had some grand scheme to manipulate the New World Order, but Fiona’s death botched his plans.
Raj arrived, having journeyed to Rebma and back. He reported privately to Martin, told us nothing, and left again. But damn he looked stoic! Speaking of stoic, Benedict was off sulking in some shadow alley. According to Corwin, he was the only elder who refused to accept the new ‘responsibilities’ bestowed by the Unicorn. Ahh, I wouldn’t worry about him. What, like he’s going to raise an army and take Amber? It wouldn’t be enough of a challenge for him.
When pressed for what the Unicorn said, the elders all got suspiciously tight-lipped. Flora did stress that we shouldn’t behave in the same way that her generation did, which pretty much gives us free rein to do anything, right?
