Aidan, Master of Rossnowlach (Played by Nathan)
top
|
|
Son of Julian.
|
|
What was known of Aidan in Amber when the campaign began: Aidan had had no contact with the Court of the Third Realm before the game's start. He had been raised in the First Realm by his mother, Lady Rionach of Rossnowlach, a House of the Hunt. He had served for a few years as a courier to the Court of Thorns, reporting sometimes even to King Finnvarra himself. |

Andrew (Played by Val)
top
|
|
Son of Fiona. Andrew moves easily and quietly. He has a pleasant smile that reaches his eyes, and carries a sword. |
|
What was known of Andrew in Amber when the campaign began: Andrew had done some work under Bleys in the Amber Expeditionary Army, where he acquitted himself well, though he was involved in a small scandal over a "friendly fire" skirmish with some of Caine's marines. |
|
That which does not kill me, makes me stronger. - Friedrich Nietzsche |
Blade (Played by Chris)
top
|
|
Son of Bleys. |
|
What was known of Blade in Amber when the campaign began: Blade, playboy of Torveth, was mainly famous among the younger generation for throwing lavish parties in his home shadow. His sister, Rio, often stayed with him there. |

Brent (Played by Ben)
top
Brent stands about 5'4", and normally dresses like a seaman with loose black and brown clothes tied with a brown sash at the waist. He has a hard, angular face and dark eyes. When particularly distracted, or tired, he tends to walk with a limp, a remnant of a childhood injury. He always dresses for the occasion, and looks his best at every function he attends. |
|
Son of Corwin. |
|
What was known of Brent in Amber when the campaign began: Brent was very little known in Amber. He had attended the 20th Anniversary of Random's reign, but had little contact with his cousins and Amber family otherwise. |

Byron (Played by Darrell)

|
|
Son of Flora. |
|
What was known of Byron in Amber when the campaign began: Since the 20th celebration, he has been seen around Amber occasionally with his younger sister, Meridian. |

Dartmouth (Played by John)
top
|
|
Son of Brand. |
|
What was known of Dartmouth in Amber when the campaign began: Dartmouth has been hanging around Kashfa of late, visiting with family. "One does have one's obligations," he will tell anyone who asks. Dartmouth finds Amber to be a fascinating place, and thus you hardly ever see him in "the Slump" while he is there. It is more common in Kashfa, and if you met him in his 'not-quite-home' shadow it was how he spent most of the time. |

His resolve is not to seem, but to be, the best. -Aeschylus, The Seven Against Thebes |
Duncan (Played by David)
top
![]() |
|
|
Son of Benedict. Duncan's clothing is loose and comfortable, done in brown and black. He walks with a smooth graceful step his hand often resting on the sword slung at his hip. |
|
What was known of Duncan in Amber when the campaign began: Duncan has held minor positions in almost all the military forces of Amber, including Bley's Expeditionary, Caine's marines, and the City Guard. He has never stayed in any one place long enough to gain high rank, however, and he has never been truly tested by his father in Amber's Army. |

Guillaume "Guy" (Played by Jeff)
top
![]() |
|
|
Son of Gerard. Prepared all his
life to fight invaders with thousands of horse-mounted warriors at his
side, the green and pleasant lands of Amber and the comforts of the Castle
-- however badly scarred -- all come as a shock to him. |
![]() |
|
What was known of Guillaume in Amber when the campaign began: Until the very end of the campaign's first session, Guy had been kept as Gerard's dirty secret, trapped in Osric's shadow prison and raised there by Osric. He had become one of Osric's top warlords and enforcers, and knew almost nothing about Amber except what his adopted father had taught him. That Gerard had returned to the prison, seemingly only to help them escape, was beyond his understanding.... |

Laertes (Played by Mark)
top
Laertes, with grizzly beard and long scraggly hair (both a rich chocolate brown), prefers to lounge about in sturdy cotton earth tones: greens, browns, deep reds, and pale yellows. His clothes are certainly more functional than formal. When the occasion arises to play the role of Son of Amber, Laertes dresses in the current fashionable city attire, caring little about individualising his appearance.. |
|
Son of Gerard. When Gerard first presented Laertes to Amber, Laertes was held in awe as a mountain of muscle with a determination and willingness to match. Shortly after Laertes walked the Pattern, Gerard returned him to his shadow home. Then something changed. Rumour in the Court says Laertes settled down in a cabin in a sparsely populated forest, far away from everyone, and grew lazy. When Laertes returns to Amber during this impending gathering, everyone will notice an incredible change: he is now lazy and tired and fat. His granite muscles have softened, his fit body has bloated, and his mind has grown numb. Now, at over 500 pounds, Laertes is still incredibly strong ... but primarily from having to support his massive girth. |
|
What was known of Laertes in Amber when the campaign began: After his enthusiastic first visit to Amber, Laertes was seen surprisingly little. It is known that a few of his cousins visited him in his own rural home shadow, but those visits became fewer and farther between as the boy's depression made him less and less interested in receiving visitors. |

Martin (Played by Barbara)
top
|
|
Son of Random. Martin is fierce
and keen, but as yet undirected. He has maintained his own power and
waits to see where he will place his loyalty. He is happiest when sent
on out-shadow missions by his father or assisting Benedict far from
Amber. He despises Corwin and his lethargy, and wishes his father did
not associate with him so much, though Martin is always cordial. With
all the other elders except Benedict, Llewella, and Random, he is distant
but polite. |
|
What was known of Martin in Amber when the campaign began: Martin spent as little time in Amber as possible during any official events, though he stopped in at the 20th Anniversary celebration briefly. That particular visit seemed to be curtailed by his reaction to Brand's return from the Abyss.... Since that time he has maintained his privacy, visiting Benedict and Random only occasionally, and spending most of his time in his own secure shadows or in Rebma with Llewella and his grandmother, Queen Moire. |

Meridian (Played by Anne)
top
|
|
Daughter of
Flora. |
|
|
What was known of Meridian in Amber when the campaign began: Meridian was very young -- merely a girl -- at the 20th anniversary celebration. She and her brother Byron continued to live on Flora's Shadow Earth, where they grew up, and were only rarely seen in Amber. |

Philip (Played by Jack)
top
|
|
Son of Julian. Though carefully polite and well-mannered, Philip is generally quiet and closed-off, sharing little of what it is he does off in Shadow or of his opinions on any matter, providing just enough participation in any conversation to keep it alive. |
|
What was known of Philip in Amber when the campaign began: Philip kept to himself across a wide range of naturally connected Shadows. He was little seen in Amber and was not known to particularly associate with his father. |
Once you've had a taste of her you'll never be the same....

Rio (Played by Leslie)
top
![]() |
Rio is a young Latina, sparkling alive with laughter and passion. Her eyes, lashes and jauntily short hair are all a lush deep black with scintillating golden highlights. Her skin is the warm golden-brown of a dedicated sun-worshipper and her 5'7" frame flows in the lean athletic lines of a swimmer. However, there can no doubt at all that Rio is feminine, especially as she favors very revealing clothing of bright tropical colors and patterns. |
|
Daughter of
Bleys. |
|
What was known of Rio in Amber when the campaign began: Rio has made intermittant appearances in Amber in the most recent decades, brought in shipboard by Caine. She has always stayed only briefly before returning to Shadow in the company of her father. Since the 20th Anniversary celebration, she has spent much of that time with her brother Blade on his home shadow. |

Sebastian "Skeet" (Played by Jarrod)
top
|
|
Son of Flora. Skeet was raised in the Keep of Lord Ailill. Skeet can be a pleasant and courtly gentleman, but he is one who does not like to be crossed. There are rumors that he has killed someone for insulting him in the past, but that of course is just a rumor. He is known as a high level sorcerer and Trump Artist among the Fae. Skeet moves easily in all of the circles of Fae society. He has learned the ways of whom he is with to blend with them, and tries to not draw attention to himself. While in a social situation, there is no doubt that he is a most charming man, and has left many broken hearts among those who would be on his arm at the events, as he has closely guarded his heart. |
|
What was known of Sebastian in Amber when the campaign began: Sebastian was unknown in the Amber court at large; Florimel had left him in the First Realm to be raised by whichever House was chosen by the Fae King Finnvarra. As it was, Sebastian's childhood was spent with Lord Ailill of the Black Oak Arden Way, one of the great Keeps guarding a trod between Arden and Faerie. |
Non-Player Characters
...The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming"
Commander in Chief, Lord General Benedict (played by Jesse in 2004, Eric in 2005)
started the game in charge not only of Amber's armies, but also as coordinator for the fleets and in command of the forces in Arden. His position in Arden was proving difficult to maintain once Julian withdrew along with all the most senior Arden Rangers, leaving Benedict's men at the mercy of Arden's true inhabitants.
2005: Benedict and a large portion of Amber's armies, along with most of the Arden, have been excised from Shadow. They are Elsewhere.
Princess Fiona
had become Random's right hand, assisting him with the subtler nuances of the powers he had been forced to command.
2004: Fiona and Random together used the Jewel of Judgement to try to resist the shattering power of the Patternstain. She died with him when the Jewel exploded. Ultimately, their efforts failed, and that failure became this game: Undertow.
Deceased.
Prince General Bleys (played by Paul in 2004, Ian in 2005)
was in shadow with the Amber Expeditionary. He and Random never got on well, but Random gave him leeway in this area to explore and to seek out lost soldiers and shadow pockets of the Patternfall War.
2004: Injured in a confrontation with the Unicorn, Bleys languished in a coma.
2005: He is currently recovering somewhat at Brand's Keep of the Four Worlds.
Princess Flora (played by Simone in 2004, Carla in 2005)
kept herself apart from Amber, spending most of her time on Shadow Earth and in the company of her relatives and lovers among the Fae Realms.
2004: Flora was shot and her face scarred when she prevented Corwin from committing suicide.
2005: She continues to act as a calming, diplomatic presence in the Castle.
Prince Brand (played by Ian)
had been pulled from the Abyss by divers from House Hendrake. He was physically weak and had been stripped of the Pattern. He returned to Amber and was allowed to retire to a townhouse in Kashfa, where he has been visited by his sons, Luke and Dartmouth.
2005: Returning almost instinctively to his only remaining source of power after being attacked by Andrew / the Unicorn's Avatar, Brand has been recovering at the Keep of the Four Worlds... site of the Font of Power.
Prince General Gerard (played by Cal in 2004, Joe in 2005)
had been reduced from Prince Admiral of Amber's fleet to Prince General of the Amber City Militia at Benedict's insistence. He was a brooding, angry presence in the Castle at the game's start.
2004: after rescuing his son Guillaume from Osric's fading prison shadow, Gerard returned to Amber and was elected Regent by those few family members who remained.
2005: Gerard continues to act as Regent. He gave Osric's Greatsword into the keeping of Guillaume.
Prince Admiral Caine (played by Joe)
plied the seas of Amber and shadow with his arm of the fleet. He came into Amber about 6 months before to support Gerard against Benedict's charges of incompetence. Caine's plea was unsuccessful; he left Amber in disgust with a skeleton part of the fleet and had not been seen since.
2004: After leading the efforts to locate the children of Amber and pull them out of the way of the Shadow Storms, Caine returned to the seas.
2005: He continues to shore up and defend Amber's now-open sea lanes against incursions.
Prince Julian (played by Arref in 2004, Steve in 2005)
appeared to have ceded command of the Arden Rangers to Benedict without a fight. He retired to his private estate in Arden. At the same time, the most senior rangers in the Arden forces also retired, leaving only junior staff. Records, pathways, supply stations, and other vital infrastructure became lost or were found vandalized overnight. Benedict had to strip the army to reinforce the Rangers, and then found them under constant seige by Arden's inhabitants. Julian maintained that he was not involved.
2004: Julian sacrificed himself on the damaged Pattern to rescue Gerard. After dying, however, he woke up in his own lodge in Forest Arden, weakened, but very much alive.
2005: The Fae believed Julian was dead, however, and went into mourning for the King in Green. King Finvarra then offered the Crown of Green to Julian's son, Philip, who recognized that to take it up would mean the final death of his father. His hand forced by circumstances, Philip did indeed take up that crown, and Julian died peacefully in Amber.
Deceased.
Prince Corwin (played by Dave)
had spent most of his time in Amber "helping" Random, though he was, frankly, retired. He had grown dissolute and depressed as the realms defined by his own Pattern turned out to be threadbare shadows of his desire.
2004: After being rescued by Flora from his attempt to shoot himself in reaction to the Unicorn's message, Corwin made it his role to explain his and his siblings' failures and their roles in the Patternstain.
2005: Like Flora, he remains in the Castle, recovering and offering what advice he can.
Princess Llewella
was in Rebma. Politically, she was an important force there. With Random on the throne, Rebma's queen Moire believed they could finally press their claim for differential status from other Golden Circle Realms, and Llewella was seen as an effective liaison for these negotiations.
2004: Unfortunately her "conversation" with the Unicorn did not leave her well, and she took her own life shortly after the Patternstain incident that began the game.
Deceased.
Princess Deirdre
had fallen with Brand into the Abyss. She had one thin thread of consciousness present through a construct in Tir, but was otherwise lost.
Pre-game: Deceased.
Prince Osric
was dead. Or, not so dead, but banished, cursed, and imprisoned by Oberon, Finndo, and Benedict. Finndo died putting him there.
2004: He was finally killed when the Shadow Storms of Patternstain washed across the barriers of his prison, admitting the poisonous (if fading) energy of the Pattern into his realm.
Deceased.
King Eric
was dead.
Pre-game: Deceased.
King Random
was, well, King. Of Amber. Ouch.
2004: Fiona and Random together used the Jewel of Judgement to try to resist the shattering power of the Patternstain. She died with him when the Jewel exploded. Ultimately, their efforts failed, and that failure became this game: Undertow.
Deceased.
...Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;William Wordsworth, "The World is Too Much with Us"
Lady Dara of Sawall
was the mother of Despil and Jurt Sawall and of Merlin. She had married into House Sawall from House Hendrake after Merlin's birth and had Merlin adopted. She was working on developing a plausible position from which Merlin could advance towards the royal court of Thelbane. Swayvil's sudden departure at the beginning of the game made her life very busy indeed.
Lord Mandor Sawall
started the game in the Fae Realms, under his long-time guise as The Dagda, advisor to King Finvarra and the tutor of his children. He was called away to tend to the pressing needs of Dara and Merlin on Swayvil's death.
Lord Despil Sawall
was a noted Courts historian. In the game he was seen briefly in support of Merlin's bid for the Throne of Chaos.
Lord Merlin of Sawall (played by Dave)
woke up in a sweat at the beginning of the game and was not allowed to stop running until he hit the Throne of Chaos.
...Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;William Wordsworth, "The World is Too Much with Us"
Adhamhnan is a little seen Fae Knight Independent. Eredwaith is a fae alchemist. Lord Ailill is the Keeper of the Black Oak Arden Way, loyal to King Finnvarra and to Julian, the King in Green. A pale, dark-haired warrior of the Sidhe, he had been given Sebastian, one of Princess Florimel's oath children, to raise for his House. Elurival is a fae sylph in debt of service to The Derga. Ailleen is the Mistress of the Inn at the Crossroads. King Finnvarra (played by Simone) is the King of the Fae Realms, sometime lover of Princess Flora. He is also the nephew of Oberon. Many prophecies said that he would rise and lead an army of the Unseelie when the man who killed him died. That man is Finnvarra. The Derga is the keeper of the Inn at the Crossroads, but also in a very real sense he is the Inn. Rionach of Rossnowlach, the Huntress, is a fae noble independent. She is loyal to Finnvarra's court, and has tied her fate to the Realm's by bearing a son of mixed Amber heritage. Dubhdara is a Lord Knight of Finnvarra's court.
