Cole is a serious student, perhaps in his early 30's. He has the vague awareness that he is there to serve his mother's purpose--whatever that may be--but he does not resent this. It does bother him that he is somehow not developing as quickly as his mother believes he should. He keeps thinking something went wrong with his Pattern walk, and does a lot of research on this whenever he has private time, which is not very often. On the information level, Cole is a very respected instructor of theory in sorcery. He is well read in history and the arts, and does his best to be a true renaissance man.
Questionnaire - Cole
1. Has your character ever had a pet? Describe it, the circumstances, etc. If not, why not?
Cole has owned several dogs in his lifetime. He also takes very good care of his horse, a bay mare named Alma. The dogs were from the castle courtyards and kitchens, stables or kennels, mixed breeds of unknown parentage with very little use except that the young lord cared for them and wanted them. Under Cole's eye they have all been superbly trained, with a repertoire of amusing tricks, though very little "work" skill. None of them have been good hunting dogs, for example, but they will fetch sticks or slippers or little items Cole drops, or they'll run and run with him on his rides. His current dog is an elderly beagle bitch named Lyric. She is still very alert, but she isn't very interested in running or baying. She spends most of her time on his feet under his desk at the tower, or curled up in his sweater on a seat in the auditorium during lectures.
2. Describe your character's favorite restaurant.
Cole likes to share fine dining in a dark, romantic atmosphere. Fine wine paired with perfectly prepared food, complex but not busy, with music that is the companion to conversation rather than its competitor-these elements combine to make a full dining experience. As an epicurean, Cole can enjoy such a meal alone, but of course, intelligent company makes it perfect.
3. What if your character had a chance to put a single question to the Supreme Deity of his/her choice? What is that question?
When I have the full power of the blood and Pattern that is written in my genes, how will I recognize the Divine outside of myself? I have seen the theoretical limits-or, I should say, lack of limits-this power bears. When we know that even this great power was created by flesh-and-blood kin, will there be any element of life that is not part of our own creation? But you only wanted one question .
It is this: How do we matter to the Power that imagined the power of creation that is the Pattern?
4. What if your character could put a single question to the Amberite of their choice that MUST be answered truthfully... who would you ask, and what would the question be?
"Fiona, in what way short of death can I undo what you have done to me?"
5. How would your character describe the perfect death?
Cole believes that knowledge, full understanding of and integration with the Pattern, means immortality, though it could also possibly mean death of the flesh. A death that encompasses such understanding-perhaps akin to the enlightened being's transcendent moment-would be, to him, a death without regret.
6. What single feature of members of the opposite (or, rather, more attractive) sex does your character find most appealing, and why?
Cole is very attracted to intelligence. He is mainly attracted to women, though he has admired some men (and unavailable women) almost to the point of love. He understands the stories of Knights whose duty and following of a beloved leader precludes other relationships. He is not in that position, but it is one with which he could easily empathize.
7. Describe your character's first battle, first hunt, or first killing of another person.
Cole has had neither the opportunity nor the desire to kill anyone. He has participated in no battles. He has a tendency to be in the way at hunts, as he is more interested in the scenery and the opportunity to ride than in the pursuit of game.
8. Describe an outfit your character would wear to look 'sharp', assuming time, money and preparation were no object.
Cole wears very expensive but understated garments in the most current, if conservative, styles. He values quality and craftsmanship, and actually has a passing interest in tailoring. The drape of the cloth of his capes, the way his trousers hold a pleat, the luster of the silks and woolens each let an educated observer know that Cole pays very handsomely for his clothing. He wears it very well, maintaining his body meticulously as the machine that it is in respect for its maker and for its use, someday, as a vessel for the Pattern's work.
9. Amberites take personal Oaths very, very seriously. Describe an Oath your character has made, and how it was executed -- or if it is still active, how they intend to discharge it.
Cole swore the Hippocratic Oath when he was given his M.D. He also would have sworn the equivalent oath (if there is one) for his practice and teaching of the magical arts. These oaths will follow him throughout his life, and he takes them very seriously indeed.
